Trauma & Burns
Burn Fluids (ABA Consensus 2 mL/kg) Calculator
Initial fluid rate for major burns using the American Burn Association consensus formula.
Formula
24-hour total = 2 mL × weight (kg) × %TBSA
Half in the first 8 hours from the burn, half over the next 16
How it is used
- The ABA consensus formula replaced the 4 mL/kg Parkland formula for adults to reduce over-resuscitation; children use 3 mL/kg and electrical burns 4 mL/kg.
- Rates are adjusted in hospital to a urine output of 0.5 mL/kg/hr in adults and 1 mL/kg/hr in children.
- Fluid is indicated for burns of about 20% TBSA or more in adults (10% in children); smaller burns need oral fluid and analgesia.
