Fluids & Resuscitation
Parkland Formula Calculator
Crystalloid for the first 24 hours after a major burn, from weight and burned surface area: half in the first 8 hours from the time of injury.
Formula
Total 24h Fluid = 4 mL × Weight(kg) × %TBSA
How it is used
- Give HALF of the total fluid volume over the first 8 hours (starting from the time of the burn, not time of presentation).
- Give the remaining HALF over the next 16 hours.
- Lactated Ringer's is the fluid of choice.
Key points
- Do not include 1st degree burns (erythema only) in the TBSA calculation.
- Titrate fluids to maintain urine output of 0.5-1.0 mL/kg/hr.
