Dynamic Compliance Calculator
Tidal volume over peak pressure minus PEEP; unlike static compliance it also reflects airway resistance.
Formula
Vt / (PIP - PEEP)
How it is used
- Dynamic compliance uses peak pressure, so it falls with airway resistance as well as with stiff lungs; static compliance (plateau pressure) reflects the lungs and chest wall alone.
- Peak minus plateau is the resistive pressure; over about 10 cm H₂O is high: suction, a bite block or a bronchodilator.
- Dynamic falling with static steady: a resistance problem (secretions, a kinked or bitten tube, bronchospasm). Both falling: a compliance problem (ARDS, edema, pneumothorax, mainstem intubation, abdominal distension).
