Hemodynamics
Ejection Fraction (EF) Calculator
Percent of end-diastolic volume ejected with each beat; the main measure of left ventricular systolic function.
Formula
((EDV - ESV) / EDV) * 100
Reference: Normal (preserved) 50% or more
How it is used
- Heart failure by LVEF (2022 AHA/ACC/HFSA): reduced (HFrEF) 40% or less, mildly reduced 41–49%, preserved 50% or more; improved (HFimpEF) was 40% or less and is now above 40%.
- EF is a fraction, not a flow: a small, stiff ventricle can eject a normal fraction of a small volume and still give a low stroke volume.
- In practice EF comes from echocardiography; the volumes here are for working the formula.
